Complementary Studies: Liam Marley
Pupil: Joe Kosminsky
Date: 25/02/08
Evaluating Time: 2hrs
The pupil was finally introduced to a major scale during this lesson. Previous music theory objectives, as well interval note objectives, eventually built up to the subject matter of scales. Scales have been mentioned all throughout the lessons but the pupil was never at the right stage in the learning process for these to be incorporated. Along with this subject, past objectives were re-introduced so that the pupil can have sufficient practice to enable a more steadier and constant progression. The lesson also gave the pupil chance to improve their hand forms and fret accuracy, while practicing the
Lesson Objectives:
1.) To introduce the scale of C major, with the intention of the pupil learning to play the scale on the instrument.
Outcome: Finger movement improved with the chromatic exercises and the introduction of major scales. Joseph’s finger and hand movement became less cumbersome and his fluidity has increased with each lesson.
2.) To recap on unison (root note), fifth and eighth (octave) interval notes so the pupil fully understands this subject. After this the pupil will demonstrate their knowledge by playing fifth and eighth interval notes of a specific root note.
Outcome: Great improvement was demonstrated during the lesson with Joseph’s hand techniques.
3.) To persist learning ‘The Ballad Of John and Yoko’ by The Beatles.
Outcome: Great improvement was demonstrated during the lesson with Joseph’s hand techniques.
4.) To introduce a new genre and song, in the form of ‘Cold Sweat’ by James Brown to teach the pupil new rhythms and bass styles.
Outcome: Unfortunately this objective was unable to be attempted as the lesson material for ‘Cold Sweat’, i.e. the bass tablature and audio CD, were unavailable. This will hopefully be attempted next lesson.
5.) To introduce soul music to the pupil, as the bass lines associated with this genre incorporate both bluesy and funky bass patterns. The source material for this is ‘Sure As Sin’ by Soul artist Candi Staton.
Outcome: With Joseph making leaps and bounds with his bass playing and being able to play ‘The Ballad Of John and Yoko’ confidently and comfortably, he was given another tablature to study.
However the new soul genre bass pattern from ‘Sure As Sin’ was introduced ten minutes before the end of the lesson, due to the time it had taken for the other objectives to be completed. This meant that Joseph did not feel comfortable learning the song’s patterns, attempting to get involved with only ten minutes.
