JK - Evaluation: Lesson 2

Complementary Studies: Liam Marley

Pupil: Joseph Kosminsky
Date: 20/11/07
Evaluating Time: 30mins

This lesson went very well, with Joseph being able to grasp concepts and techniques quickly. The right (plucking) hand form is nearly there, it is very relaxed and Joseph feels more comfortable with this position now.

However the pupil’s left hand form is much to be desired, as when an exercise is started which involves the finger per fret rule Joseph will eventually revert to using just one or two fingers to scale the fret board. However this is to be expected as the pupil is still in the early stages of teaching.

This week the pupil was able to name a few bass parts; these included the pick-ups, the tuning gears, the fret board, the jack input and the bridge. Now feeling more comfortable holding the bass guitar (with the aid of a strap), Joseph was able to put his efforts into practising his fingering techniques.

Lesson Objectives:

1.) To recap on the anatomy of the instrument with the intention of the pupil to learn 3 or 4 of the parts of the bass for next lesson.

2.) To recap and persist with the pupil holding the bass correctly and comfortably.

3.) To work on correct fingering techniques with both hands, concentrating on the left hand (fret hand) during this lesson.

4.) To introduce a diagram of the fret board notation, not concentrating on any specific notes as of yet as it can be very daunting. If time allows begin with the notation of each string: beginning with the low (thickest) string E, A, D and G.

Problems:

The same expected problems occurred as from last week, with the pupil straying from utilising the correct finger per fret fingering technique and going back to the bad form of one or two fingers for each fret.
