Complementary Studies: Liam Marley
Pupil: Joseph Kosminsky
Date: 13/11/07
Evaluating Time: 45mins
The first lesson ran more smoothly than I had expected. There weren’t many hiccups or slurs in my teaching technique, considering it was my first lesson and the lesson plan aided me to deliver enough material so the lesson did not run out of steam.
Although the pupil had previous beginner experience playing the 6 string acoustic guitar, they wanted to learn the bass as a new instrument and to be taught as a total beginner in regards to knowledge of the bass itself, its sound and fret board notation.
As regards to the lesson objectives for lesson 1 (refer to Lesson Objective below) each one was tackled and met by the pupil. Obviously objectives 3 and 4 will be on going throughout the lessons so that good technique is gathered.
Lesson Objectives:
1.) To give a brief history and explanation on the bass guitar itself so that a better understanding of the instrument is reached.
2.) To teach the anatomy of the instrument, explaining the different parts that make up the bass.
3.) To get the pupil to hold the bass in a comfortable and correct position as not to cause any discomfort or future damage.
4.) Finally show and explain correct and comfortable fingering techniques with both hands, while getting the pupil to play a basic bass line.
Problems:
No major problems occurred during the lesson apart from the expected. These included the pupil straying from utilising the correct finger per fret fingering technique and going back to the bad form of one finger for each fret. However this is expected especially in the early stages, the pupil will just be reminded to use the correct technique with the help of certain exercises.
